In speaking with a Rabbi reference, after he gave wonderful information about a boy, he seemed hesitant. When asking if there was anything else we should know about, the Rabbi hmmed and haawed and then explained, 'well, there is ONE Chisaron here....the boy WORKS, he's not a fulltime learner'.
Upon hearing this information, a smile came to my face, but my dad told the Rabbi exactly what was on my mind. He said 'for us, a boy who works is not a Chisaron, for us, this is a Ma'alah!'
A woman was saying that now since her granddaughter has a broken engagement, now she will have to set her sights lower and actually consider working men.

The idea that working to earn a living is a chisaron is extremely recent, and has absolutely no basis in: Tanach, Mishnah, Jerusalem Talmud, Babylonian Talmud, Rashi, Tosefos, Rambam, Gaonim, Rishonim, Shulchan Aruch or Acharonim.
ReplyDeleteThose who say that working to earn a living is a chisaron are guilty of creating a new and false religion that was unknown to Jews who lived in previous centuries; they are like the founders of Christianity or the founders of Islam or the founders of Reform “Judaism.”
G_d will surely punish them for the needless anguish they caused for innocent Jewish men whose only “crime” is that they worked to earn a living. G_d will also inflict abundant punishment on them for all the matches and marriages that they prevented or ruined without just cause.
"God will surely punish"? Whoa there. Let's leave divine retribution to the divine.
